What are they Thinking?
Freedom of speech. Important. I get it. We express our freedom in many ways. An unspoken responsibility, at least it never needed to be spoken before, of freedom is that we express ourselves respectfully, always bringing honor to ourselves and to our families and to our community.
Well, my local school Board has found it necessary to speak on this subject. Here’s this morning’s headline: “Schools to Alter Dress Code . . . Pajamas Banned.” The reason for taking this action? Quoting from the newspaper article, “Officials made the decision to ban pajamas because the holes in the front of pajamas pants are not appropriate for a school setting.”
Putting behind us for today the reasons kids are showing up at school in pajamas, could “holes in the front of pajamas” be the only explanation for this decision? How about at least trying to explain to the students that the world judges them by their silent communicators? Wearing pajamas in public places like schools indicates poor judgment, immaturity, and disrespect, for starters. We are living in tough times, but I find it difficult to believe that children are being forced by circumstance to wear pajamas to school.
