Doing Business Today

People are asking, “What do I need to do for my business to grow in this economy?”  That question is similar to the one asked of the great entertainer Steve Martin.  Fans ask him, “What do I have to do to be successful in Hollywood?”  Steve and I answer the same way, “Be so good that they can’t ignore you.”  Who does the they refer to?  The they refers to everyone with whom you come into contact.

Google Steve Martin.  Watch a few of his performances.  You will see a man who has perfected his craft.  Obviously, success will not come if you are not very good at what you do.  Secondly, Steve is a wonderful communicator.  He’s not loud.  He’s not boastful.  He is, however, aware of his surroundings and he conducts himself accordingly.  He is also visible on several platforms – out front in music, television, movies, publishing.  Behind the scenes directing, producing, purchasing.  He, and his team, quietly go about the job of creating a quiet storm of competence.  And just about everyone (there are always a few people who can never be satisfied) with whom Steve and his team come into contact love being in their company because they are so consistently good.

When we create an expectation in a customer’s mind and we support his expectation by being so good at what we do, we have created a strong bond.  It is the strength of that bond that enables our business to succeed in good times and in bad.  To read more stories of success and to learn how you can build a business that will thrive in good times and in bad, visit our on-line store and purchase a copy of Outfluence, The Better Way to Influence – you will receive it in the mail –  or download an electronic version and begin right now!

What are “They” Hearing?

No matter how many sales presentations you’ve given this week, no matter how tired you are, no matter how many miles you’ve traveled, it’s important to be sensitive to the situation of the audience in front of you at the moment.

United States Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was in Europe this week to talk debt and threats to the global economy.  It didn’t go too well.  Borrowing some quotes from a Reuters story, here’s why Secretary Geithner’s talk was not received particularly well:

“I found it peculiar that even though the Americans have significantly worse fundamental data than the euro zone that they tell us what we should do and when we make a suggestion … that they say no straight away,” Maria Fekter told reporters afterwards, recalling a difference of opinion between Geithner and German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on how to reinvigorate the euro zone and tax financial deals.

“Of course your financial challenges in Europe are within your capacity to manage financially, you just have to choose to do it,” Geithner told the audience, sitting cross-legged and slightly slouched in his chair.

“I had expected that when he tells us how he sees the world that he would listen to what we have to say,” said another attendee.

While Secretary Geithner was undoubtedly attempting to be helpful, his tone was not well-received and many thought the Secretary was not prepared to listen.  In addition, he arrived in a private car while the euro zone ministers arrived together in a bus.  Not a good visual.  Not a message reflecting sensitivity to tough times.

What was the Secretary’s audience hearing?  They were hearing a message of here’s-how-you-do-it from a representative of our country facing its deepest debt crisis ever, highest rate of unemployment in many years, and largest number of its population living in poverty in decades.

His communication was sending the wrong message.  His audience was not hearing what he was selling.  Today, in this post-financial collapse economy, it’s increasingly difficult to create the trust and confidence that decision makers need to buy.  Our new e-book, Outfluence for Sales Professionals, is a resource that the Treasury Secretary could use as a refresher before his next “sales pitch.”  God bless him – his job is not an easy one.

Job Match: Court reporter

Friday, September 16, 2011

PHOTO COURTESY OF METRO CREATIVE GRAPHICS DEMAND FOR COURTREPORTERS IS EXPECTED TO GROW BY 18 PERCENT THROUGH 2018, MUCH FASTER THAN THE AVERAGE FOR ALL OCCUPATIONS.

SPECIAL TO NORTH JERSEY JOBS

What They Do

Court reporters create verbatim transcripts of speeches, conversations, legal proceedings, meetings, and other events. They play a critical role not only in judicial proceedings, but also at every meeting where the spoken word must be preserved as a written record. Typical tasks include:

• Transcribing verbal exchanges word-for-word using a stenotype machine.

(A stenotype is a special type of keyboard device that allows the user to press multiple keys at once.)

• Electronic reporting, i.e. recording proceedings with audio equipment. The reporter monitors the process, augments the recording to identify speakers and other information not picked up on the recording, and checks the tape for clarity and quality.

Once the proceeding is over, the reporter may create a written transcript from the tape.

• Increasingly, court reporters provide closed captioning for the deaf and translation services for non-English speakers.

Qualifications

Court reporters learn the skill at vocational and technical schools. They advance in skill through on-the-job practice. In New Jersey, court reporters must be certified. The key requirement for certification is to pass the state-approved examination given by the National Court Reporters Association. Details are given at http://www.njconsumeraffairs .gov /court/court _licensee.htm.

What They Make

As of May 2008, court reporters had median annual wages of $49,710 with a range from $25,360 to $83,500. Wages for official court reports are slightly higher than for those employed in business. Beyond wages, court reporters can also earn significant income from freelance work.

Where They Work

As of 2008, a little more than half of court reporters were employed by State and local governments in courts, legislatures, and various agencies. Most of the remaining salaried workers were employed by court reporting agencies. Others worked for corporations and in the broadcast industry.

2008: 21,500

2018 projection: 25,400

Drivers / Trends

Demand for court reporters will be driven by the increasing need for the service while fewer people are entering the profession.

• Court reporters with certification and those who choose to specialize in providing Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART) services, broadcast captioning, or webcasting services should have the best job opportunities.

• The Americans with Disabilities Act and other federal legislation mandating that broadcasters and colleges and universities provide captioning and translation for non-English speakers and the deaf or hard of hearing will also drive demand for court reporters trained in CART.
